HAPPY SLICE - The Hockey Puck

I love getting my tax return. It feels like free money although it most definintely is not. Sort of like a gift from a stingy relative or a lottery winning. Even when it's not a huge amount but just enough to do something, I get excited. My plans for the money vary widely. Sometimes I save, sometimes I spend, sometimes a little bit of both. This time I decided to save most of it since I'm not currently employed and to spend just a little bit.

This is my new toy. Isn't it grand?

My first project was a cookie recipe called "The Ultimate Ginger Cookie". From the beginning things didn't go too well. Chopping up the dried ginger took forever. Boring. Then the dry to wet ingredients ratio was way off. Way off. And it said I was to cream the oil with the sugar for 5 minutes which seems way too long. They were hockey pucks. Actually they aspired to be hockey pucks. The dough was so dry and crumbly it took a lot of elbow grease to get them into the hockey puck format. It was a disappointment frankly. But I am not discouraged. No, not me. Stay tuned for my next installment.

HAPPY SLICE

We all love food. Good food. And although we may disagree on what constitutes good food, most of us enjoy pictures of food. I have always liked cooking and baking but now that I have a bit more time on my hands and I'm well rested, I have done more than ever. Want to see some pictures?

Here are some of the successes.

This was my first attempt at homemade cheesecake complete with the spring form collar and all. It was delicious. I gave some away to friends and I froze some. I'm always experimenting with freezing things. It still tasted good a few weeks later. This recipe came from my Ghiradelli Chocolate Cookbook.

Also from my Ghiradelli Chocolate Cookbook, simple but well loved Chocolate Chip cookies. These were for eating now.

I froze these for baking later. Smart eh?

An attempt to recreate a salad I had in the south of France. Shrimp salad.

Egg, Bacon and Blue Cheese sandwich from my favorite cooking website: www.smittenkitchen.com. It sounds a bit strange doesn't it? The lettuce was tossed lightly with a bit of balsamic vinegar, warm bacon and blue cheese. Then you put the fried egg on top. It was delicious.

One evening I decided to take one of my favorite snacks, mashed avocado with salt & pepper on an english muffin, to a new level. But what to add? What would take this over the top and turn up the volume? The answer is obvious - BACON. I added bacon and a bit of blue cheese. Ambrosia.

SIX HOURS OF FRUSTRATION

Once upon a time, about 4 or maybe even 7 years ago, on a shopping trip in downtown Edmonds, I bought two, black wrought iron, display units for tea cups and saucers. I have a tea cup and saucer collection courtesy of my Grandma Lucille - may she rest in peace.

It began as a simple plan full of optimism and naivete. And apparently a lack of memory regarding my previous experience with drills and the like.

Here is the tale of how it took 6 hours for me to install this tea cup and saucer display unit.

  • Attempt to measure the intended area.
  • Darn, the tape measure keeps slipping.
  • Start over.
  • I'm calm. I am now calmly finding the center of the intended area.
  • 20 minutes later, center of intended wall area located.
  • Now find the center of that area, remember that there are 2 of these display units.
  • Okay, found the center.
  • Let's measure again just to be sure since I'm notorious for measuring incorrectly.
  • Hmm. The numbers don't match at all.
  • Start over. I am calmly starting over.
  • It's been over an hour. Wow, is it supposed to take this long?
  • Okay, the horizontal location is found and marked.
  • Measure vertically from the ceiling. They have to match so it hangs straight.
  • Measure again.
  • Hmm. The numbers don't match.
  • Measure again.
  • Wait. Do I really want these in this location?
  • Yes. Let's not change the plan.
  • Measure again.
  • Okay, they finally match and are marked with a pencil.
  • Now I have to move to the area near the refrigerator.
  • Stand on the counter to measure since I'm still not tall enough on the stool/ladder.
  • The same problem with measuring.
  • It's been about 3 hours and finally the marks in place for both display units. Time to rest, it's late. I can finish this up tomorrow.
The very next day.
  • Tools at the ready. Drill with charged batteries in my apron pocket. Screws and plastic insert in my other apron pocket.
  • First you make the hole for the plastic insert that holds the screw. Somewhere in the back of my mind I know that these are used when you are NOT going to screw into a stud.
  • Feeling a bit proud at the moment, first hole completed.
  • Now working on the second hole for the other end of the unit.
  • Hmm. Why did the drill make that funny sound? Why won't the drill bit go in any further.
  • Heavy sigh. Seems I've hit someting and the drill bit won't move. It could be a stud or something else since this is somewhat above the stove.
  • What should I do? Oh God.
  • Oh, I could move the whole thing over a few inches. No one would notice at this height.
  • Same problem.
  • It's been over an hour.
  • Take a break. Do I really want these in this location? I make the decision to move them.
  • I go through the entire process for another wall only to find the same issues.
  • At long last, I decide that I don't need to put them both up on the same wall. Over the window in the kitchen seems like a nice place to put one of them.
  • Okay, it's up. I can't believe it took 6 hours and only one is up on the wall.
  • I hate these type of projects.
  • Hmm. I don't know if I even like the way it looks. It's a bit fussy but I just can't care about it anymore. I bought it, it's up and I'm going to live with it.
  • Sitting on the couch it slowly dawns on me that if it was a stud that I hit on the first attempt, I could have skipped using the plastic insert and just put the screw into the stud.
  • Crap.
  • Wait. I might even have a stud finder but how does it work? I guess I will find out when I try to put up the other display unit.
  • Oh god. There's still another one.
I have many talents but projects that require tools is not one of them.

THE TROUBLE WITH TOOLS

Tools. Those strangely shaped mysterious pieces of equipment. They seem to come from some other place that exists far, far away. Sometimes you see people from this place, this male dominated planet, walking around with strange belts on themselves. Slung low on their bodies, weighed down with tools, things that jingle and jangle when they walk, seeming to be held in place by sheer determination. These male creatures walk around, heads held high, dirt and grease on their hands, confident that whatever project they take on will be correctly completely. I look at these males in awe. They seem to know instinctively which tools to use to solve any given problem. Where does such knowledge come from I wonder. Why don't I have that knowledge? Can one acquire this information somehow?

The trouble with tools is that I have no idea how to use them correctly. Whenever I try to do anything with tools bad things happen; holes in the drywall, bleeding, expletives, yelling, broken glass, swearing, cuts, bruises and a general sense of frustration. And more importantly long, extensive spans of time.

My idea of measuring goes like this: first I struggle clumsily with the tape measure, my arms aren't long enough, or I'm not tall enough to hold it in place, it slips and slides and eventually I arrive at the determination that item in question is say...15 inches and...a little bit.

I hate home improvement projects. You return from the home improvement store full of pride because you actually found the gizmo you were looking for. You walk through the door all excited and feeling productive because you're getting things done. All you want to do is change the knobs on the TV armoire. That should be a cinch right? Just unscrew the old ones and screw in the new. Simple

No, it doesn't go that way. At all. First, the span of time has created some kind of vacuum and even the hand drill is unable to pull the screw out. Then you try to jimmy it the knob off the drawer with a screwdriver chipping the wood in the process. After 45 minutes you finally get the knob off only to find that someone took a short cut when staining the wood, stained it with the knobs on, so the area under the knobs is unstained and the new knobs don't cover this mistake. So, if you really want the TV armoire to look good, you now have to stain the area. So, 3 hours to change 4 drawer knobs and although they are in place, the project is not complete. Grrr.

PLENTY OF PROJECTS

When people ask me what I'm doing with my time these days my reply is "working on projects". And they smile and nod with a quizzical look on their faces as if to say "I like her but I don't really know what she's talking about and I'm afraid to ask her anymore questions".

You know all those things on your "To Do List" that you can't ever get to during the work week and then when the weekend comes around you still don't get to it either? Well, those are type of things I'm talking about. Maybe you're too tired, or resentful that you might have to spend your weekend doing something other than having fun. At least that's how I always felt.

This infamous "To Do List" hanging over my head is chock-a-block full of things that are not the least bit glamorous or even very interesting but things we all need to do sometimes. Such as cleaning out the closet, reorganizing a storage space, pulling out those moving boxes you set aside years ago when you moved into your current place but never did get around to unpacking, sorting through your files or maybe, um, scanning them so that they are no longer paper files but digital. Are you nodding in agreement? Is your brow all furrowed up in confusion? Okay, maybe it's just me. I do realize that I spend WAY too much time trying to figure out new ways to reconfigure my cupboards, closets, living room furniture to make things more appealing or give myself more space.

So does that answer your question about what I've been doing with my time? No? Okay Nosey Nelly, here's a list for you to ponder or make fun.

  • New paper for inside kitchen cupboards
  • Sharpen all knives
  • Reorganize cupboards
  • Install a shelf in pantry
  • Reorganize pantry contents
  • Clean out under bed storage
  • Clean closet and reorganize contents
  • Scan all paper files
  • Paint living room and complete redecoration project
  • Install tea cup and saucer displays
  • Paint hallway and hang pictures
  • Paint kitchen
  • Clean out and eliminate unused items from storage locker
  • Create Earthquake kits and emergency plans
This is a summary, a short subset, of my entire list. I only have a few things left to complete and boy am I excited. What's on your "To Do List"?
